Abstract

135,897. Rutherford, R., and Miller, C. E. Nov. 6, 1918. Motor power plant.-An internal-combustion engine of the revolving-cylinder type is combined with a radial-flow turbine element upon which act the exhaust gases from the engine. In the example described, the internal-combustion engine comprises 36 cylinders a<3> arranged in a drum a, Each cylinder contains a piston h (omitted from Fig. 1) supported upon a gudgeon pin j. The gudgeon pins project through slots a<6> in the cylinders, and at the ends carry rollers j<1> running in grooved cams c<1> arranged in fixed cam-plates c. Explosive mixture enters the common combustion chamber k by way of pipes g, chambers c, slots a<6>, and ports a<4>. Sparking-plugs are screwed into sockets a<2> in the hollow shaft a<8>, The period of induction is adjusted by means of rocking valves f. The combustion products drive the pistons h outwards until diverging exhaust nozzles a<5> are uncovered, whereupon the gases pass through the nozzles to stationary guide-blades n, whence they are directed upon vanes l mounted upon the drum a. They then pass through fixed blades o and are finally exhausted through ports r.
