Abstract

1357944 Treating exhaust gas; silencers ZEUNA-STARKER K G 10 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 42401/71 Heading F1B Multi-cylinder I.C. engine exhaust gas purifying apparatus comprises a plurality of combustion chambers one inside the other, the combustion spaces being sealed from one another to substantially prevent the inter-mixing of the gases in the separate chambers, one or more individual cylinders of the engine being connected to respective chambers so that the exhaust streams of the individual cylinders do not intermix with one another in the zone of the respective combustion spaces. The external combustion chamber 2 consists of a double-walled closedended tube 6, the space between the walls being filled with heat insulating material. A second tube 7 is supported within the tube 6 and forms the inner combustion chamber. Two tubes 11 and 14 extend through the walls of the tube 6 and two more tubes 12 and 13 extend through the walls of both tubes. An outlet pipe 4 fixed in the end wall of tube 7 extends through the end wall of the tube 6. A second pipe (not shown), parallel to the pipe 4 extends only through the end wall of the tube 6. By connecting selected individual cylinders to the inner and outer chambers, pulsation of the stream of exhaust gases reaching each chamber is avoided and continuous combustion is achieved. The references S 1 , S 2 , S 3 and S 4 indicate portions of the chambers which become incandescent and maintain combustion. In a modification, pairs of exhaust pipes are combined outside the apparatus, so that only one pipe leads into each of the chambers. The outlet pipes may extend through opposite ends of the external chamber. In a further modification, two arrangements of the pipes leading from a six-cylinder engine are shown.
