Abstract

1344409 Reciprocating compressors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 Nov 1972 [14 Dec 1971] 53482/72 Heading F1N A multi-cylinder reciprocating compressor has a separate discharge tube 36-41 from each cylinder 30-35, at least some of the tubes 39-41 being connected to a common discharge line 48 at a joint 44 so located as to cause discharge pulses travelling through the discharge tubes to arrive at the joint at substantially evenly spaced intervals. This results in quieter operation and removes the need for muffling chambers. The other discharge tubes 36-38 are similarly connected to a common discharge line 46 at a joint 42. The discharge tubes are flexible and arranged side-by-side where they connect to their respective joint 42, or 44, whereby to create an aspiration effect assisting in the withdrawal of gas from the tubes. In the case of equi-angularly spaced cylinders the discharge tubes are of equal length and diameter whereas inequi-angularly spaced cylinders require equal diameter tubes of unequal length.
