Abstract

1354205 Calcining coke MARATHON OIL CO 20 April 1971 [6 May 1970] 51583/72 Divided out of 1353461 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Particulate petroleum coke made by a delayed coking process and having an average particle size (a.p.s.) ranging from 10 to 50,000 microns and having a volatile matter content ranging from 10 to 25% by weight based on the dry coke, is pre-treated at a temperature in the range 450 to 600‹ F., e.g. for from 0À3 to 20 hours, with a gas containing at least 2% by volume free O 2 , e.g. air, and which may include CO, CO 2 , A, He, H 2 O, before calcination, e.g. at from 1800 to 3000‹ F. for from 0À25 to 8 hours. The calcined coke has an a.p.s. which is equal to or less than that of the initial coke and lies in the range 10 to 15,000 microns. The pretreatment gas may contain up to 30% by volume of free O 2 .
