Abstract
Gases containing methane are obtained from mixtures of predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbons containing an average of 4 to 15 carbon atoms in a process wherein a mixture of the hydrocarbons and steam is passed under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure at a linear velocity not exceeding 0.3 f./s. and a space velocity of at least 400 v./v./hr. through a bed of a particulate nickel-alumina catalyst, which has been proposed by coprecipitation followed by reduction of the nickel content to metallic nickel, and the mixture of hydrocarbon vapour and steam is passed into the catalyst bed at a temperature of above 350 DEG C. such that the bed is maintained by the reaction at a temperature within the range of 400 DEG to 550 DEG C. The catalyst may contain an addition of an oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or magnesium, as described in Specification 969,637. The catalyst preferably has a particle size in the range 150-1000 microns. Specification 820,257 also is referred to.
