Abstract

1354082 Roofs A STEINGASS 14 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 42773/72 Heading E1W A roof for a hall or stadium comprises concentric roof rings, each with an outer compression ring 5, an inner tension ring 6 and intermediate tension members 7, adjacent roof rings being interconnected by stays 4. The roof may be closed or annular (Fig. 4). The compression rings may comprise tubes 5 (Fig. 5) or I-section members, the tension rings being cables 6. Bracing wires 9 may be employed in tension to prestress the roof upwardly (as in Fig. 1), being connected via members 25 to the bottoms of stays 4 via bolts 26, further connectors (22) being employed to interconnect stays 4, cables 6 and members 7 (Fig. 5, not shown). The roof covering may be of sheet steel or plastics, and each section is of frustoconical or frusto-trough form. An external compression ring 8, Fig. 1 or (18), Fig. 3 (not shown) is used and a peripheral latticework of stays 4 may be provided at the outside. The spaces between the stays 4 provide for lighting and/or ventilation.
