649,729. Roofs. PONT, H. M. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33162. Convention date, March 5, 1941. [Class 20(iv)] A roof-supporting structure of " umbrella " form comprises resiliently flexible arcuate rafters arranged as radial ribs and connected by a tensioned peripheral eaves cable or bundle of cables, the sectors thereby defined being closed by a roof covering directly supported on flexible wire networks slung in such a way that the compression stresses in the rafters balance the tensile stresses exerted thereon by the networks. In the square roof framework shown the steel wire or cable network slung between the rafters 1 and eaves cable 6 consists of purlin-wires 3, rafter-wires 4 and anti-torsion bracings 5; instead of the direct bracings 5 the network may be so woven as to prevent torsion; the mesh may be sufficiently small to support tiles directly. Walls or doors may be suspended from the eaves cable. The corners rest on supports each comprising a pair of outwardly sloping posts 7, Fig. 5, the roof being steadied by ties 9 anchored at 10. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an inner roof lining supported directly on the wire networks. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
