Abstract

1350075 Finishing fabrics M ACKERMAN 27 July 1971 [20 Aug 1970 17 June 1971] 40131/70 and 28454/71 Heading D1S A woven woollen fabric is stabilized by generating static electricity within the fibres of the fabric to effect agitation and reorientation of the fibres thereby relaxing the fabric. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a fabric 2 is unwound from a roll and passes over a slotted tube 3 supplying hot compressed air, a curved frame 4 covered with steel mesh holding the fabric against the slot. The pressure and temperature of the air and the fabric feed rate are accurately controlled so that static electricity is generated within the fibres of the fabric. These electrical charges may be reinforced by drawing the fabric over a series of ebonite rods 5. A row of jets 6 cause steam to impinge on the fabric and the deposited moisture is drawn through the fabric through a slot in a tube 7 connected to a suction pump. This moisture treatment removes all electrical charges from the fabric. Heated takeup rolls 8 are provided. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the fabric 2 is intermittently fed over a steel mesh platform 9 resting on an open-top chamber 10 enclosing a cluster of jets 11. coupled to a steam supply and a pipe 12 coupled to heated compressed air source. A cowl 13 has an outlet pipe 14 connected to a suction pump and has its base covered with steel mesh to prevent lift of the fabric. In use the fabric is fed so that an untreated section thereof completely covers the platform 9. Compressed air is supplied through the pipe 12 to generate electrostatic charges and, after a time delay, steam is supplied through the jets 11 to remove these charges. During the feeding of the fabric, the cowl 13 is raised.
