Abstract

1344027 Automatic control of ratio METALLURGIE HOBOKEN-OVERPELT 14 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 37841/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for selectively controlling the oxidising-reducing nature of the combustion products of a burner 1 in a melting furnace (e.g. for Cu or Cu alloys) and hence maintaining a constant oxygen content in the molten metal, comprises conduits 4, 5 supplying gaseous fuel 6 and an oxygen containing gas 7 respectively to the burner 1. Each conduit 4, 5, has a pre-heater 10, 11 a by-pass 12, 14 having a valve 13, 15, and a further valve 8, 9, providing a constant flow of gas. In operation, an electro-chemical cell 16 dips into the molten metal and sends a signal proportional to the oxygen content to a regulator 18 which compares it with a signal proportional to the predetermined desired oxygen content from the transmitter 19. A signal proportional to the difference is sent to a control transmitter 20 and regulator 21. Transmitter 20 also sends a signal proportional to the predetermined difference in temperature of the gases 6, 7, whilst apparatus 22 measures the actual temperatures of the gases by thermocouples 23, 24. The regulator 21 acts on the valves 13, 15 according to the difference between the signals from apparatus 22 and transmitter 20. For example, if the oxygen content of the molten metal is too high, the regulator 21 raises the inlet temperature of the oxygen containing gas by acting on valve 15 and thus reduces the rate of entry of the oxygen-containing gas in moles per unit time.
