Abstract

1,239,253. Controlling oxygen steelmaking. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 30, 1968 [Oct. 17, 1967], No.46225/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division G3 Control apparatus for a basic oxygen furnace steel making installation of the type having an oxygen lance 16 for supplying oxygen to a molten metal bath 12 within the furnace 11 and positioning means 17 for moving the lance relative to the molten metal mass 12 for controlling the supply of oxygen thereto during the three reaction phases of a heat, includes instrumentation 19 for continuously deriving output measurement signals indicative of the oxygen content of the molten bath 12 and means for using the signals to control continuously the position of the lance 16 and the flow rate of oxygen supplied therethrough so as to controllably produce molten steel having a desired end-point temperature, carbon content and oxygen content. A disposable bomb thermocouple is inserted at 22 for obtaining the temperature of the molten mass 12 and a stack gas flow rate meter 21 measures the gas flow rate, all information being fed to a digital computer 25 which provides control signals for the lance height and oxygen blowing rate controls 17, 18, coolant addition control 26, turn-down control 27 and automatic charge control 28. The instrumentation 19 providing the stack gas analyzer provides output signals indicative of the oxygen partial pressure and the per cent of CO and CO 2 in the stack gas. The computer 25 solves the equation shown for the oxygen utilization factor (OUF), which is indicative of the oxygen content of the bath 12 and can also be correlated with the bath carbon content. The thermocouple temperature is compared with an integrated heat output signal representative of the predicted bath temperature and based on the time integration of the initial bath temperature, and a corrective signal is supplied, if necessary, e.g. to supply coolant additives.
