Abstract

1340552 Auditory protection device B G LONNSTEDT 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 24198/71 Heading A3V An auditory protection device for use on a safety helmet 1 comprises an ear muff 2 slidably mounted on a support arm 4 by a member 3, one end of the arm 4 being secured to an attachment unit 6 which is pivotably mounted in use to the helmet 1 such that the muff 2 can be pivoted to a resting position off the ear of a wearer, the end of the arm being swingably attached to the unit 6 so that the arm can be swung away from the wearer's head in use, spring means acting on the end of the arm for resiliently pressing the muff against the wearer's ear, and adjusting means to bias the spring means according to the contact pressure desired between the muff and the wearer's ear. As shown, the unit 6 may comprise a plastics housing 22 and a plastics housing support 21 mounted on the helmet 1 by means of a fastener consisting of a screw 14 and a complementary member 18 passed through apertures 16, 23 and 26 in the helmet 1, support 21 and housing 22 respectively. The arm 4 may as shown be a U-shaped spring wire member the free end of each leg 5 of which is formed into a coiled spring 33 with an end 34 which is gripped by a holder 36 in the housing, adjustment of a screw 37 to which the holder is secured serving to move the holder and bias the springs 33 to adjust the contact pressure between the muff 2 and the wearer's ear. Slots are provided in the edge of the housing 22 facing the rim 17 of the helmet 1 to facilitate swinging of the arm 4 away from the wearer's head. The muff 2 may comprise a dome-shaped plastics casing having a lining of foam plastics and a replaceable plastics sealing ring around its inner periphery intended to engage the wearer's head in use. The attachment unit may be insulated to prevent electrical contact between the inside and outside of the safety helmet.
