1339593 Metallic fabrics CABENG RENDELL PTY Ltd 13 Aug 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 38215/71 Heading D1K [Also in Division El] A floor structure, for use as a walkway in industrial plants and on machines, consists of a grid formed of flat bars 1, 2, 3 particularly metal bars, of which bars 1 are provided each with a plurality of slots of L, C, Z or similar shape providing a main slot portion 8a and one or more angled slot portions 8b, and bars 2 are adapted to be notched to provide reduced portions fitting in the slot portions 8a and angled tongues 11 fitting in the slot portions 8b. Bar 3 are optional edging strips adapted to fit around the edge of the grid. The grid is made by first forming the tie bars 2 of a section to match the shape of the slots 8a, 8b by providing them each with an appropriate main portion 9 and one or more flanges 10, threading the thus formed tie bars through aligned slots in the main bars 1, and then bending back the flange or flanges 10 to flatten the tie bars, shearing the tie bars on either side of each slot in the main bars in the process of carrying out the bending back operation, whereby the tongues 11 are formed within the slot portions 8b. The main bars 1 may be flat strips as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 or may be of narrow U section (Fig. 2, not shown) with apertures formed at intervals along the fold portion to provide a roughness to assist walking on the grid. A roughness may be provided by knurling the edges opposite the fold portion when these edges are to be uppermost, in which case the apertures provide drainage. Knurling may also be applied when flat strips are used as the main bars 1. Edging strips 3 may be either flat strips having bent-out tongues to fit within the ends of U section bars 1 (Fig. 5, not shown) or may be of C section having slots to receive the ends of the bars 1 or/and 2 (Fig. 6, not shown).
