Abstract

1334451 Dewaxing oils ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [11 May 1970] 25748/71 Heading C5E A waxy oil 2, e.g. a lubricating oil distillate, at a temperature above its cloud point is cooled in a chilling tower comprising a plurality of stages in each of which cold solvent is injected and substantially instantaneous mixing of the solvent and the oil is effected by the agitators 12. The oil/solvent/precipitated wax mixture 14 is then cooled in a scraped surface chiller 15 by not more than a further 35‹ F. and the precipitated wax is then separated at 17. As shown, the separated wax 20 can be mixed with further cold solvent 21 and the wax separated from the mixture 22 at 30. Suitable solvents are ethane, propane, butane or mixtures of (a) methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone, (b) methyl ethyl ketone and toluene, (c) acetone and toluene, (d) acetone, benzene and toluene, or (e) dichlorethane and dichloromethane.
