Abstract

Petroleum lubricating oils are dewaxed by adding thereto a dispersion or solution in a dewaxing solvent of the dewaxing aid claimed in Specification 758,421, mixing, and cooling the mixture until wax separates. The dewaxing aid sepecified is a composition containing 55 per cent by weight of a Friedel Crafts condensation product of a chlorinated paraffin wax containing 12 per cent chlorine, and naphthalene, and 45 per cent of polymerized methacrylate esters of C10-C18 aliphatic alcohols. Solvents referred to are mixtures of aliphatic ketones and aromatic solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone/benzol, acetone/benzol, dibutyl ketone/benzol, aliphatic hydrocarbons such as propane, butane, naphtha, chlorinated solvents, sulphur dioxide and furfural/benzol. The wax may be separated by filtration, centrifuging or decantation.
