Abstract
A substantially wax-free petroleum oil which develops a haze on cooling to a low temperature is refined by contacting the oil with urea and separating the resulting urea reaction product from the oil. A haze-free oil is thus obtained. The urea may be activated with a solvent such as water, methanol, ethanol and acetone. The oil may be filtered through a bed of urea or agitated with urea in a mixer and afterwards separated by settling, centrifuging or filtering. A hydrocarbon solvent may be added to the oil, such as an aromatic or naphthenic solvent for example toluene or cyclohexane, a branched chain paraffin such as isooctane, or a hydrocarbon having less than 6 carbon atoms such as propane, pentane or butane. If necessary, the oil is first dewaxed by dilution with a solvent such as those described above, chilling and separating the wax. The urea may be regenerated by dissolving in a solvent or melting and separating from the haze-forming substance.
