Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils, for example middle distillate fractions boiling in the range 250-700 DEG F. and lube oils, are dewaxed in a process which comprises adding 0.001-0.5% wt. of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer to the wax-containing hydrocarbon oil prior to filtering the precipated wax from the oil. The copolymer may comprise 1-40% wt. vinyl acetate and 60-99% wt. ethylene, and may have a molecular weight of 800-3000. The copolymer acts as a filter aid, and may thus be employed in conventional propane/butane, MEK/toluene, and MEK/MIBK dewaxing processes. Prior to filtration, solvents which reduce the viscosity and aid in the filtration, e.g. low boiling liquid paraffins, light petroleum oils, ketones or aromatic compounds, such as propane, benzene, toluene, acetone or higher ketones, and mixtures thereof, may be added. For example, a propane/butane mixture in an amount of 1-9 vols. of solvent per vol. of oil may be added and the filtration effected at - 20 DEG F. to - 40 DEG F., or a methyl ethyl ketone/toluene mixture may be employed, filtration being effected at +20 DEG F. to - 20 DEG F.
