Abstract

1333705 Combustion apparatus of the periodic combustion type R D PEARSON 21 Dec 1970 [19 Sept 1969] 46420/69 Heading F1L A combustion apparatus of the periodic combustion type comprises fuel injection means comprising tuned resonance means adapted to control the flow of fuel in response to the frequency of the combustion cycle. The apparatus shown in Fig.1 comprises a combustion chamber 10 having a discharge pipe 12 which discharges through an outlet pipe 14 and which is formed with an intake 16 through which ambient air enters during the rarefaction wave which follows the pressure wave. A fuel supply pipe 17 extends into the combustion chamber being formed with discharge orifices 18. Fuel is supplied into the pipe from pump 20 through line 19 and inlet 24 and air under pressure for atomisation of the fuel is supplied from compressor 23 through line 22 and inlet 21. A restrictor 25 may be provided. In Fig.3 the fuel supply pipe is formed with restrictors 33, 34 which define chambers 30, 31, 32. Chambers 35, 36 communicate with the chambers 31, 32 respectively. In Fig.4 the combustion chamber 42 is of annular form and a series of fuel supply pipes 17 communicate with the chamber 42 each through a plenum chamber 44 and orifices 43. Each pipe 17 receives fuel from a manifold 45 through inlet 24, and air from a manifold 48 through inlet 21. The fuel pipes may be interconnected by pipes 46 each containing an aerodynamic non-return valve 47. The fuel pipe is dimensioned to generate oscillations in resonance to the combustion frequency so as to control flow of fuel from the inlet.
