Abstract
809,570. Generating combustion products under pressure; liquid, gaseous or pulverized fuel combustion apparatus. GUSTAVSBERGS FABRIKER A.B. Dec.11, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 37843/56. Class 51 (1). In an intermittently-operating combustion apparatus comprising a combustion chamber having openings with non- return valves for the supply of air, means for the supply of fuel (preferably liquid fuel), and an outlet for the products of combustion, the fuel supply means are positively controlled to supply fuel intermittently and at a frequency which is not greater than the resonance frequency of the apparatus and is lower than 50 periods per second. The outlet of the combustion chamber is connected to a device for recovering heat from the products of combustion. The apparatus shown comprises a combustion chamber 1 having air intakes 4 controlled by non-return valves 5, air passing through the tubes 6 into the chamber 1. A fuel injection device 2 supplied from a pump 3, and an igniter 7 are also provided. The combustion chamber 1 is connected to a discharge duct 8 and the combustion chamber and discharge duct are enclosed in a container 11 which may be supplied with water so as to constitute a hot water boiler or a steam generator. The discharge duct 8 includes two bends and a diffuser 9 is provided before each bend and a further diffuser 10 is provided at the outlet from the discharge duct. More than one discharge duct may be provided and the ratio of the length to the diameter of the duct is 180 to 1, or greater. The total cross-sectional area of the ducts in square metres is smaller than one quarter the product of the volume of the combustion chamber in cubic metres and the length of the discharge ducts in metres. The frequency of the fuel supply means, also the capacity of the fuel supply means at any one frequency, may be variable. The fuel supply means may be a reciprocating pump having means for varying the speed and/or the effective length of stroke thereof. Alternatively a pressurized source of fuel may be used being provided with an intermittently-operating cut-off valve which controls the supply of fuel to the combustion chamber and has a controllable frequency and/or controllable opening periods. Means such as swirl vanes may be provided for imparting rotary movement to the air entering the combustion chamber. The apparatus may be constructed for the combustion of gaseous or pulverized fuel.
