Abstract

941,448. Treating charge. R. BOUTELEUX, and H. GRIFFON. July 25, 1961 [Dec. 9, 1960], No. 26888/61. Heading FIB. A device for homogenizing a combustible mixture to form a fuel for reciprocating I.C. engines comprises a member adapted to be positioned within a cylinder head adjacent each inlet valve, which member is elongated in the direction of flow and includes a base, a perforated zone in which the total cross-sectional area of the apertures is at least equal to the cross-sectional area of the duct to which the member is fitted, and an imperforate end portion against which liquid fuel drops carried along by inertia are atomized and are dispersed in the gas flow passing through the member. A member, Fig. 1, of any suitable substance such as metal or polymerized plastics has rows of perforations 6 and 7 so inclined as to cause the fuel mixture to whirl in opposite directions to produce turbulence and thereby assist in homogenizing the mixture. Additionally, helical grooves may be provided in the internal surface of each of the apertures to help the latter to impart a whirling motion to the mixture. Any liquid particles in suspension are hurled by inertia against the inner surface of the base 5 to be atomised and returned to the gas stream. The base may protrude into the member with a convex inner surface or the member may have a ball fitted in its downstream end to produce, inside the member, a hemisphere upon which the liquid particles impinge and, on the outside a hemisphere which may be used for location purposes. Where the base 5 is flat a protruberance may be provided inside the member on the imperforate part 2 to compress the mixture and help it to expand subsequently through the apertures. The member may be made to fit a particular inlet conduit, as shown in Fig. 5, and may have a locating projection 22. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the member is double-walled, with a heating fluid flowing in the cavity between these walls to heat up and thereby gasify the still liquid particles of fuel. The member is mounted in a cylinder head to communicate with the water chamber, longitudinal partitions being provided between the walls to guide the water to flow from the inlet to the outlet, both at the upstream end of the member, by way of the base.
