Abstract

1333533 Castors TENTE-ROLLEN GmbH CO 21 Jan 1972 [6 Feb 1971] 3022/72 Heading A4U [Also in Divisions B7, F2] In a swivel castor e.g. for a shopping trolley and which includes a running wheel 1, rotating on an axle 2, and a parallel tracking wheel 3, supported for vertical movement on a hub 7 on the axle 2, the wheels are in peripheral contact with a flat floor surface, and the wheel 3, which has an oversize bore 6, descends vertically into a groove 15 in a conveyor belt 14 to operate a locking mechanism whereby the wheel 1 is locked against running by the engagement of a pin 16 in ratchet notches 17 and is also locked against swivelling by the engagement of fixed teeth 29 in the castor bearing with teeth on a verticallymovable spring-loaded pawl 20. The pawl 20 is pivoted at 31 in the castor fork and has a projection 33 of noise-reducing elastic material which is urged into contact with the periphery of the tracking wheel 3 and descends therewith. The wheel 3 is supported in a wheel body which consists of ball-bearing discs 4, 5 force-lockingly secured together by an annular component 8, the wheel 3 being guided for vertical movement relatively to the hub 7 by the engagement of a cam 9 in a slot 10 in the castor fork. The pin 16 is provided on the disc 4. A pressure spring 12 urges the wheel 3 downwards ensuring continuous contact of the wheel with the floor and descent into the groove of the conveyer belt. In modifications, the locking pawl is pivoted intermediate its ends, rests on or is articulated with an upward extension of one of the ballbearing discs, or is pivoted in the swivel bearing for locking engagement in a slot in the castor fork. In a further modification the pawl is in the form of a pin vertically displaceable under gravity in the swivel bearing and rests on a bracket extension of a ball-bearing disc for descent therewith and engagement of a toothed disc thereon with ratchet teeth in the hollow of the fork.
