1331052 Heating and drying granular materials CHRISTMAS ISLAND PHOSPHATE COMMISSION 7 Oct 1970 [7 Oct 1969] 49210/69 Headings F4B F4G and F4U In apparatus for heating discrete material, e.g. for drying, or calcining, a fluidized bed reactor having lower converging walls 11 has ancillary fluidizing gas fed to a lower plenum 18 through a conduit 19 and has a burner 14 mounted in a tube 15 depending into the lower portion of the bed so that hot combustion gas therefrom fluidizes the bed while passing upwardly through the bed to an exhaust conduit 34. An ancillary burner 20 may be mounted in the conduit 19 and the material is fed to the bed from a hopper 21 over a metering table 22 through a charging tube 23. The treated material leaves the bed through an aperture 24 in the wall 11 and a pipe 30 forms a further discharge pipe. The reactor may be used at temperatures below 700‹ C. for heating discrete crystalline millisite and crandallite forms of phosphate rock; for preparing alumina from bauxite, and the dehydration of limanite to form hematite and/or magnetite.
