Abstract
1330158 Removing metal by fusion TENT SA 29 Dec 1970 [3 Jan 1970] 61512/70 Heading B3V Metal is removed from the surface of cast iron containing carbide or non-laminar graphite by first liquefying the cold surface by a gas-oxygen flame, converting the liquefied material into an oxide slag by an oxygen stream and removing the slag. A narrow band 1 of iron is first liquefied by heating the area with an acetylene-oxygen flame produced by an annular arrangement of 0À5 mm. diameter nozzles supplying the gas mixture at a pressure of 1À5 atmos., after which the oxide slag is formed using an oxygen stream from a central nozzle of 8-15 mm. diameter at 8-40 atmos. pressure. An area 2 of iron is next treated followed by areas 3-5 and so on until the whole surface has been treated. A cylindrical surface such as a roll or a casting mould can be treated in a similar manner. The iron may contain 4-5% C, 1-6% Mn and 1% max. Si.
