Abstract

PURPOSE: To accelerate the directional solidification of molten metal, eliminate the casting defects produced in shell struture, and obtain a sound composite roll by supplying a high pressure combustion gas continuously to the space in a mold in centrifugal casting of the shell of a composite roll.
CONSTITUTION: In cenrifugal casting of a composite roll, combustion gaseous flames are ejected from the inside surface of a mold, such as metallic mold 5, by using a gas burner 9 or the like provided with many nozzles 9a, during the time since prior to or right after pouring of shell material molten metal 8 till the point of the time when the solidification is completed. Thereby, the molten metal 8 is directly heated from the inside surface side, and the space in the mold is put in a heating atmosphere. The cooling from the inside surface side of the molten metal 8 is prevented by this and during progression of the molten metal solidification from the inside surface (chiller surface) of the metal mold 5, the replenishing of the molten metal is accelerated. According to this method, the excellent quality shell structure is assured easily and the sound composite roll or the like is cast.
