Abstract
1,198,112. Oxygen steelmaking. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. July 27, 1967 [July 27, 1966], No. 34691/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4] The throat area of a water-cooled lance for use in steel making is made variable by means of the tapered head 14 of a spindle 13 which is axially movable in the oxygen passage. Vibration of the spindle is prevented by a spindle holder 15. The taper may be in either direction, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), allowing a ring shaped fire spot in the case of a divergent taper. The head is fixed by a screw head to the spindle 13. If oxygen is supplied to the lance at a constant supersonic flow-rate, the oxygen pressure may be varied merely by varying the cross-sectional area of nozzle. Conversely the oxygen pressure may be maintained constant by varying the nozzle area as the supersonic flow-rate is altered. These methods of control are used in the steel making process described first to supply oxygen at a constant rate and thereafter towards the end of the process to increase the oxygen supply pressure without a corresponding increase in flow-rate. This results in a reduction in the residual impurity content of carbon, nitrogen, and in an avoidance of superoxidation.
