Abstract

1328276 Knitted briefs J A WHEATLEY 1 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970 19 Feb 1971 16 March 1971] 52162/70 5046/71 and 7350/71 Heading A3V A pair of briefs is formed from a single tube T<SP>3</SP> of fabric formed on a circular sock or hose knitting machine and having elastic integral terminal bands 32, the tube being first out away at 34 to form the leg openings of the completed briefs, slit completely at 38 and 39 along the cut-away edge and laid out flat, folded in two about a line at the centre of the intended crotch portion 33 of the briefs joining the points R-R and seamed up the two pairs of superimposed side edges to provide a pair of briefs with a continuous waistband. The crotch portion 33 is reinforced and parts of the tube may be of micromesh structure. An alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 5 uses two tubes with an elastic band 15 at one end only of each tube the tubes being slit longitudinally and seamed together along superimposed edges at 13 and 14, corners being cut away to define leg openings 25 and 26. A gusset 27 is sewn to edges 28 and 29 to complete the briefs and the leg openings may be elasticated. The fabric used to make the briefs is preferably a stretch fabric and may be dyed or printed preferably when the fabric is opened out in a flat condition.
