A pair of hip length stockings 10 comprises two leg portions 11 and ladder resistant hip portions 12, a slit or cut-out 13 being located along the inner face of each hip portion and the edges of the slits being formed without seams. The stockings 10 are preferably manufactured on a circular knitting machine and the leg portions 11 are preferably knitted in elastic thread material. The hip portions have cross elasticity. Slits 13 each terminate in a strip 14 which is strengthened by elastic threads and is also ladder proof. An edge strip 15 is formed from highly elastic rubber thread or plastics material. Strengthening strips 16 have double stitching or may contain an additional strengthening thread. The two hip length stockings 10 are press fastened together at 17. In another embodiment a single stocking (10<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 2 (not shown) has a belt (31) which is fixed or detachably fixed to the ends of the edge strip (15) or which may be a complete belt drawn through the edge strip (15<SP>1</SP>). A second slit or cut out (13a), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided. This slit may extend to the top, Fig. 4 (not shown), which avoids reversing when the stockings are exchanged for one another; the slits on the outer side of the hip portions (12<SP>1</SP>) may be press fastened. In a further embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) instead of the strengthening strips 16 a pile (44) is provided in the slit region (42) which differs from the surround knit in that the elastic strengthening thread present throughout the knit is only partially knitted in Fig. 7a (not shown).
