1320047 Knitted trunks and similar garments PRETTY POLLY Ltd 7 Dec 1971 [23 March 1971] 7832/71 Heading A3V [Also in Division D1] A pair of trunks, shorts or similar garment are made from two blanks as shown in Fig. 1 each blank comprising a double ply tubular piece 11 of knitted fabric and a double ply waistband 13 incorporating elastomeric material, and the two blanks are cut and seamed together along lines running centrally along the front and rear of the resulting garment from the waistband at 16a to a point 17 in the crotch region. Each blank is knitted by forming a setting-up course on needles of a circular knitting machine, holding loops of that course while the needles limit the tubular two-ply piece 11, and placing the held loops on the needles and knitting further courses 12 to unite the two plies 11a and b, one of which further courses constitutes a setting-up course for the waist band 13 which also has two plies with elastomeric yarn, e.g. spandex incorporated in at least one ply. A few further run-stop courses 14 are knitted of which one or more is knitted of a thermoplastic yarn which fuses in a later processing stage, e.g. dyeing to prevent unravelling. The blanks are either simultaneously cut and seamed together or else are cut, e.g. by hand prior to seaming on an overlock machine. The blanks may be cut and seamed at 17a to improve the shape and fit of the garment. The blanks are preferably knitted throughout of a stretch yarn and may have a patterned micro-mesh structure. In an alternative embodiment only the two ends of each blank are of double-ply, the leg-opening end being bounded by an inturned welt.
