Abstract

1328208 Laminating method JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 2180/70 Heading B5N A method of applying an adhesive to a surface which includes a large number of gaps and preferably to a surface in which the area of the material surrounding the gaps, e.g. the ends of the walls of a body formed as a plurality of honeycomb cells 15, includes the steps of forming in a sheet comprising a solid film 12 of the adhesive on a layer 11 of backing material, holes at locations thereon which correspond to the locations of the gaps on said surface, applying the adhesive film formed with said holes, to the surface so that the holes and gaps are substantially in register and applying a heat treatment to soften the adhesive after removal of the backing material. In a preferred embodiment, the sheet includes a further layer 13 of backing material, the adhesive film being sandwiched between the two layers of backing material and one of the layers being removed before applying the film to the adhesive. After softening the adhesive a further sheet to which the surface is to be bonded is applied and the adhesive cured by the further application of heat. The method of the invention may also be used in the construction of an acoustic panel in which a perforated layer is sandwiched between continuous sheets.
