Abstract

Fabrication of a panel with a decorative outer layer of the known type consisting of a substrate and decorative fibrous sheet, impregnated with a thermo-hardened resin, by (a) prepg. a decorative layer by treatment and hot solidification under pressure of a fibrous decorative sheet impregnated with a thermo-hardenable resin or a stack of thermo-hardenable resin-impregnated fibrous sheets at least one of which is a decorative sheet; (b) forming an assembly consisting of the decorative layer, a continuous or discontinuous film of a suitable adhesive and a supporting substrate, in that order; (c) the solidification of the assembly into an adhesive-bonded unitary structure, opt. at elevated temp., by applying pressure to it by means of press plates, that associated with the decorative layer having an embossed press surface. This enables resin-bonded panels to be produced with a decorative outer layer, opt. a laminate, in which a relief or intaglio pattern can be produced simultaneously using the normal relatively low pressures for adhesive bonding.
