Abstract

1,168,587. Laminated fibreboard. ABITIBI PAPER CO. Ltd. 31 Jan., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 4914/68. Heading B5N. Pressed fibreboard is produced by applying a printed sheet of paper to a partially de-watered lap and then simultaneously embossing a pattern on to the paper-covered side of the lap and consolidating the paper and lap under heat and pressure. The embossed pattern, which may represent wood-grain, is similar to the printed pattern but no attempt is made accurately to register one with the other. Preferably, a linseed or other drying oil, which may be blended with petroleum polymers, is applied to the unprinted surface of the paper to enhance the bond and impart a degree of translucency. Glassine or other suitable paper may be arranged, during pressing between the overlay paper and the platen of the press. After removal of the glassine, the printed surface may be varnished. The caul plates may be of expendable lightweight material such as aluminium or plastics or even of natural objects such as leaves.
