Abstract

1473852 Decorative laminated surfacings FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 27 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 03590/74 Addition to 1399624 Heading B5N A decorative surfacing structure is made by etching portions of a continuous metal coating on a surface of a transparent heat-set biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film to leave a metallic pattern, design or legend, and bonding said etched surface to a flexible fibrous backing sheet via an intermediate adhesive layer. The metal may be Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr or, preferably, Al, which may be vacuum-deposited, and may be reflective, opaque or translucent. The film may be coloured and embossed or printed, and the adhesive and backing may be coloured, patterned or printed for desired visual effects. The adhesive may be thermoplastic or thermosettable, hot-melt polyester being preferred; it may comprise a coating on the backing and/or film, an impregnant on the backing, or a pre-formed sheet or foil. The backing may be woven textile or glass, non- woven cellulosic, synthetic or glass fibres, or, preferably, paper. The discontinuous metal coating may be obtained by printing a continuous coating with etch-resistant ink and etching the remainder; the ink may then be removed or may remain and give a decorative effect through "undercutting". The backing and film may be united by heat and pressure, e.g. between rollers, and the backing may subsequently or simultaneously be applied to a substrate, e.g. walls, doors, furniture or panels of chipboard, blockboard, hardboard, plywood, asbestos cament board or plasterboard, by means of pressure-, solvent-, heat- or wateractivated adhesive coatings on the backing. The exposed surface of the backing may also bear anti-curl coatings and/or discrete polymeric areas for facilitating removal of the surfacing from a substrate. The surfacing may be bonded to polymeric materials by adhesive, hot-melt coating or extrusion, or backed with hot-melt polyethylene for packaging.
