Abstract

1399624 Plastics-surfaced decorative laminates FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd 31 July 1973 [15 Aug 1972] 37974/72 Heading B5N Deterioration-resistant decorative laminates of lustrous metallic appearance are obtained by heating and pressing on assembly of (i) a core of one or more phenol-formaldehyde resinimpregnated kraft paper sheets, (ii) an adhesive layer, and (iii) a surface layer of transparent, heat-set, biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate having on at least part of its inner surface a metal coating. The metal coating may be Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr or, preferably, vacuumdeposited Al, may be overall or discontinuous, and may be opaque and reflective or translucent. If the coating is discontinuous, the core may be overlaid with a decorative paper impregnated with melamine- (preferred), urea- or benzoguanimine-formaldehyde resin or polyester resin. The adhesive may be a polyurethane or linear polyester composition and may be present as a coating on the metallized layer, decorative paper or uppermost core sheet, as an impregnant in a paper layer, or as a selfsupporting sheet or foil; alternatively the impregnant of the aforesaid decorative paper may constitute the adhesive. Decorative effects may be enhanced by colouring and/or printing the constituent sheets, adhesives and resins. Discontinuous metal coatings are preferably obtained by printing a continuous coating with etch-resistant ink and etching the remainder; the ink may remain to give a decorative effect through "undercutting". The assembly may be compressed using plates and/or release sheets which are so formed as to impart a desired surface texture, e.g. gloss, suede or embossed.
