Abstract

1,268,526. Laminated panels. LUDHAM PLASTICS ENG. Ltd. 29 Oct., 1970 [19 Nov., 1969], No. 56704/69. Heading B5N. A prefabricated panel, e.g. for use in buildings or freight containers, comprising foamed plastics strips arranged in side-by-side relation and bonded one to the other by glass fibre reinforced plastics material which covers each face of each strip is produced by (1) forming a base layer of molten glass fibre reinforced plastics material of substantially uniform thickness, (2) placing a first foamed plastics strip on the base layer and uniting the foam plastics strip to the base layer by applying to the top and opposite sides of the foamed plastics strip, e.g. by spraying or brushing, a substantially uniform coating of molten glass fibre reinforced plastics material, (3) positioning a second foamed plastics strip on the base layer and pressing against the coating of glass fibre reinforced plastics material applied to a side of the first foamed plastics strip and applying to the top and to the exposed side of the second foamed plastics strip a substantially uniform coating of molten glass fibre reinforced plastics material, (4) repeating step (3) until the base layer is covered with coated foamed plastics strips and (5) curing the glass fibre reinforced plastics material to bond the foamed plastics strips one to the other. Cover sheets, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, may be applied to opposite sides of the panel prior to curing or the base layer may be formed on a first cover sheet and before curing a second cover sheet may be positioned on the coated tops of the foamed plastics strips and pressed against them. The foamed plastics strips may be made from rigid polyurethane foam or from polyvinyl acetate coated expanded polystyrene foam and the plastics material reinforced by glass fibre may be unsaturated polyester resin. The foamed plastics strips may be so positioned relative the base layer of glass fibre reinforced plastics material that the base layer has a margin around the edges thereof by which the panel may be attached, e.g. by riveting, to a frame. Each strip of foamed plastics material extending across the width of the base layer may comprise short lengths of foamed plastics material the facing ends of which are bonded to one another by the coatings of glass fibre reinforced plastics material.
