Abstract
1325716 Radial-and axial-flow compressors; gas turbine plant BROWN BOVERI-SULZER TURBOMACHINERY Ltd 14 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 59345/70 Heading F1C F1G In a metallurgical furnace plant having at least one furnace 1 discharging combustion gases through line 3 to drive a turbine 4 driving a radial-or axial-flow compressor 6 delivering combustion air through lines 9, 10 to the furnace, the compressor has stator blades 7 which are adjustable by a speed controller 11. A separatelydriven compressor (not shown) delivers compressed air into line 10 via branch line 10a to maintain a constant pressure in line 10. The speed-set value of the compressor 6 is controlled in accordance with the pressure in line 10 by means 13. Surging of the compressor 6 is prevented by opening a vent valve 15 in accordance with compressor discharge flow rates and pressure sensed at 17, 18 respectively. Overspeeding of the turbine and compressor 6 is prevented by a valve 19 and a blow-off valve 22 both controlled by a quick-acting controller 20. The adjustable stator blades may be arranged between stages or at the inlet or outlet end of the compressor 6.
