Abstract
1,004,802. Turbines; centrifugal pumps. P. J. J. DU PREEZ. Dec. 10, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962; May 11, 1963], No. 48674/63. Headings FIC and FIT. A radial inward flow turbine has an accelerating system for directing fluid flow on to the turbine rotor through a zone between the system and the rotor and includes means for bleeding off working fluid from the zone at a predetermined pressure, the rate of bleed-off being responsive to pressure in the zone. A radial inward flow turbine 10, Fig. 2, has an inlet volute 22 supplying working fluid through optional guide vanes 26 to a turbine rotor 60a discharging through opening 32. A second volute 38 communicates with a zone 28 between guide vanes 26 and the periphery of turbine rotor 60a. An impeller 60b integral with turbine rotor 60a serves to bleed off working fluid from the zone 28. The bled fluid is either returned through a diverging pipe, Fig. 4 (not shown), to the turbine inlet pipe, or in the case of a liquid is pumped by impeller 60b through an outlet pipe 40, Fig. 3, at a pressure higher or lower, depending on the diameter of the impeller, than that at inlet 44. A control valve 45 is provided in each case. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates the mounting of the impeller blades on turbine rotor 60a. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), impeller 60b is dispensed with and volute 38 communicates directly with zone 28. In this case pipe 40 acts as a stand pipe with an outlet 42 at a given height above the inlet 44. Alternatively a pressure relief valve 46 may be provided. The constructions are said to maintain the pressure in zone 28 substantially constant with variation in load on the turbine shaft 18 so as to maintain the shaft speed constant.
