Abstract

1325671 Tunnelling; shoring trenches M & H TUNNEL & CIVIL ENG Ltd 27 Oct 1970 [3 Aug 1969] 33515/69 Headings E1E and E1F A method of forming a subway tunnel involves the use of a shield 6 that is both in horizontal and vertical cross section of rectangular shape and is open at the ends and at both ends at the top. Such a shield 6 is advanced into the ground whilst the ground is excavated and removed from within the front end of the shield until the rear end of the shield reaches the line of the tunnel to be formed or is lowered onto 'this line in a pre dug excavation. A length of the tunnel lining 30 is then lowered into position within the shield through the rear top opening of the shield, the shield is advanced and the excavation back filled 32 over the lining 30. This cycle of operations is repeated until the tunnel is completed. Preferably the shield comprises two upright sides 9, 10 connected by a bottom 5 extending to at least the front end of the shield and a top 6 extending between the middle portions only of the sides, and rams 13 inside the middle portion of the shield for acting between the shield and an abutment 18 in the excavation to the rear of the shield of which the leading edges are formed as cutting edges. Ground above and to the front of the shield is'partially severed into blocks by the percussed insertion of cutter plates 27, 24. The block so isolated immediately ahead of the shield is excavated and the excavation so formed is after the rear plate is removed from its supporting frame 24 on the shield is shored by beams 26 before the shield is advanced beneath the excavation and the lower tunnelreceiving excavation started in the front of the shield.
