Abstract

1512204 Trench shields; trenching frames E F GOLDSBY 13 June 1975 [14 June 1974] 26396/74 Headings E1E and E1F A trench shield, for advancing along a trench behind an excavating machine, for shoring the sides of the trench whilst a pipe is laid, comprises a frame having trenchsupporting side members 10, with a front member 12 therebetween having projecting cutting edges 13 steerable by jacks 14 for forming the trench surfaces, the shield being advanced by jacks 20 mounted on a horizontal transverse beam 18 which is slidably mounted on the side members 10 and which bears, during an advancing operation, against the end of a laid pipe, the jack rods carrying pins 21 for engaging holes 22 in the side members 10. The height of the shield may be extended by one or more auxiliary frames having slidable side members and transversely adjustable by jacks. Pumps for extracting water from the bed of the trench may be mounted behind the front member 12.
