Abstract

1320693 Earth working F HANSEN 30 July 1970 [30 April 1969 27 Oct 1969] 22107/69 and 52520/69 Heading E1F A trench is formed by the vertical movement of either a drop chisel (5' Figs. 7 not shown) having teeth at its bottom edge or a cutter 13 which has teeth 14 along its front side, is vertically movable by a hydraulic jack 16, and may be vibrated. A polythene or metal sealing membrane is disposed about the back side of the apparatus and seals against the sides of the trench so that a bentonite slurry in the already formed part of the trench, optionally aided by a jack, urges the pipe and chisel or cutter against the face of the trench being worked. The apparatus is supported on the surface by a horizontal frame having a straight or curve guide slot for the pipe. The trench may be formed on the sea-bed. Circulating water removes the excavated soil &c up a pipe 28, assisted by water jets from pipe 18, compressed air from pipe 20 and the pumping action of the drop chisel.
