Abstract

1323770 Selective printing BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 11 Nov 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 53745/70 Heading B6F A layer of conductive ink 38 which is solid at ambient temperature and which melts when heated, is applied to support 20 in the form of an endless tape. The tape 20 has a plurality of conductor elements 52 which are embedded in the insulating material of the tape. The tape 20 and a paper strip or sheet 51 are sandwiched between a backing member 41 and a printing head 42. The printing head has a plurality of electrodes 55 whose tips are distributed in the surface of the head in contact with the tape 20. A selection circuit 56 selects among the electrodes 55 a number of pairs whose tips define a set of lines each of which constitute one portion of the outline to be printed. One electrode of each pair is connected to the positive pole of an electric supply 58, the other to the negative pole, so that a current passes through the conductive ink between the tips of the selected pair of electroducers. In this way the ink is melted and transferred to the paper. Individual character printing with the head moving, line printing and whole page printing are possible depending upon the size of the printing head 42. In (Fig. 5), the endless tape 20 is passed continuously through a bath of molten ink (30). However, at the printing stage, the tape is advanced intermittently in synchronism with the paper tape 51, character by character. The difference between the continuous and intermittent movement of the tape 20 is accommodated with two tensioning rollers (25, 28) forming loops (61, 62).
