Abstract

1445020 Making electric connectors AMP Inc 14 Nov 1974 [26 Nov 1973 6 Sept 1974 11 Oct 1974] 49245/75 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] A connector 2 comprises a cylindrical elastomeric body 4 around which spaced conductors 12 extend, the conductors being formed on a flexible insulating film 10 which is wrapped around the body and has its marginal abutting portions 14 bonded together. The body is of silicone rubber with a core (6) of glass or metal strands and is wrapped in a flexible printed circuit 10 comprising a polymeric film 10 and parallel conductors 12; marginal portions 14 are bonded 18 to form a tab (16) and the conductors terminate short of the free end of the tab. To make the connectors a continuous web 30 of the printed circuit, a continuous length 32 of body material and a continuous strand 34 of bonding material are fed through an apparatus, Fig. 9, comprising a forming station 76, bonding station 78, cooling station 80 and cutting station 126 by means of rollers 72, 74 and an endless belt 40. The forming station comprises a conical mandrel (90) and die (92) which fold the web 30 about the body material 32 and strand 34, before they pass through heating blocks (116, 118) and cooling blocks (121, 122).
