Abstract

1489075 Electrical connector AMP Inc 12 Dec 1974 [9 Jan 1974 9 Sept 1974] 53874/74 Heading H2E [Also in Division B3] A method of making a multi-contact electrical connector 3, 83, comprises stamping or severing a series of strip-like contact blanks 76, (99), Fig. 13 (not shown), from a continuous strip 74, (98) of metal, bonding the blanks to a continuous web of flexible insulating material 77, (97), so that they extend across and are spaced apart longitudinally of the web, and roll forming the blanks to define one or more bent contact portions. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the sheet metal 74 is fed between stamping dies 15 to form a ladder strip 75 and at a laminating station 16 the strip 77 is overlaid and bonded to the central portion of the strip 75. The strip is then fed to a rolling station 17 which includes four or more pairs of forming rollers, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), used for progressively forming the cross-members 76 of the strip into contacts. Carrier 82 of the ladder strip is removed either before or after passing through the station 17. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 13, the web (97) is fed from a supply station (94) to a severing station (95) which severs individual contact lengths (99) from the strip (98) and deposits them on the strip. The strip is precoated with adhesive and when it has set, the strip with the contact lengths is passed through a rolling station (96). The contacts may be joined by two parallel webs (93) of plastics, Fig. 12 (not shown), and only one end of each contact need be shaped, Fig. 11. In all cases the contacts can be pre-plated, plated after forming or spot plated to provide the desired contact surface.
