Abstract
1323684 Distillation of water BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 15 Oct 1970 [15 July 1969] 35699/69 Heading B1B Purified water is produced from salt water by boiling it in evaporator 1 and conducting the steam through pipe 3 to a condenser 2, the condensate (i.e. purified water) being forced through pipe 15 and one-way valve 17 into receiver 16 by means of the pressure of steam in the condenser. When the liquid-level in evaporator 1 reaches a predetermined lower level, the float 24 and linkage 27 automatically make the supply of heat to the evaporator inoperative, and the valve 21 in the salt water supply pipe 20 is opened. When the liquidlevel in evaporator 1 reaches a predetermined upper level, the valve 21 is automatically closed and the supply of heat to the evaporator is re-established. The apparatus may be disposed outboard at the stern of a boat, condenser 2 and the lower end of pipe 20 being immersed in the sea. Evaporator 1 may be heated by hot combustion gases from a volatile fuel burnt at a wick in heater 8, the flow of hot gases to or away from the evaporator being controlled by dampers 12. The heating means may be a gas burner provided with a pilot flame. In a modification, a magnet is mounted on the float 24, and the valve 21 and the heating means are controlled electrically.
