Abstract

[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] Steam or hot-water boilers comprise two independently fired boilers combined in a single unit, a main shell type boiler A fired with solid fuel and an auxiliary oil or gas fired shell type boiler C supported on the main boiler shell by branch pipes B communicating with the steam and water spaces of the two boilers. The supply of fuel to the auxiliary boiler is controlled in dependence on the temperature or pressure within the main boiler. The rise of steam pressure above a predetermined level effects the closing of a pilot valve F in gas piping F<1>, F<2> opening below the boiler, and the consequent closure by the gas pressure produced, of a main gas control valve F<3>. A fall of water level also effects this result by means of a float-operated valve F<4> in the gas piping. The auxiliary boiler may be used for night duty and cut out during the day or it may augment the main boiler during periods of exceptional demand.
