June 1971 [19 June 1970] 19316/71 Heading D1L In the continuous treatment with a hot gaseous fluid of a web (or thread) of material 1 in a treatment chamber 2 at above atmospheric pressure the material 1 passes through an admission chamber 3 and an intermediate compartment 4 before entering the treatment chamber 2, and passes through a further intermediate chamber and a discharge chamber before leaving the apparatus, which is symmetrical about the line M-N. The chambers 2 and 3 are kept at the same pressure, the intermediate compartments 4 being at a lower pressure, and the chambers 3 are at a lower temperature than the chamber 2, the walls 14 and 15 being heat-insulated. Conveying belts 37 and 38 protect the material from contact with sealing means 32 at the inlet to (and also the outlet from) the apparatus. In the embodiment the main chamber 2 contains a tank 16 of water 17 with a heat exchange 18 therein. The apparatus could have only one chamber 3 and one chamber 4, the material entering and leaving the apparatus by the same chambers, there may be only one heatinsulated wall (either 14 or 15, the other not being heat insulated) and one or both conveying belts may be omitted.
