Abstract

1319585 Filter casting MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 10 Nov 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 47794/69 Heading B5A A method of forming an article e.g. a fire radiant, from particles of material suspended in a fluid, e.g. a ball clay with ceramic fibres in water, comprises causing the fluid to pass through a screen former 3 by fluid pressure differential so that a conglomerate is formed on the former, and providing a matrix plate 5 to define the thickness of the conglomerate, and causing it to bear with pressure on the conglomerate so as to shape the article. In Fig. 1, vacuum is applied to a connection 4, and the plate 5 is resiliently mounted by means of rubber fillets 6 and rubber bands 7. As the conglomerate builds up and blocks the screen, the pressure differential forces the plate to compress the fillets 6 and the conglomerate. The plate 5 and screen 3 can be recessed or ridged, and can be formed as separable or collapsible parts. The suction applied at the connection 4, can be supplemented or replaced by pressure in the fluid. The method can also be used to produce foundry refractories, e.g. runner liners, elbows, valve or riser sleeves, and lids for crucibles. It is also stated that the invention can be used to form composites of boron or carbon fibres with a synthetic resin binder.
