Abstract
1439181 Making shell moulds KOMATSU SEISAKUSHO KK 22 May 1973 [22 May 1972] 24389/73 Heading B3F A method of making a shell mould comprises applying a facing agent containing a powdered refractory and a binder comprising novolaktype phenol resin admixed with vinyl acetate resin to the surface of a metallic pattern (1) heated to an elevated temperature to form a film (3) of said facing agent, applying a shell mould sand on to the film prior to said film being cured completely, removing excess sand and calcining the mould thus formed. The powdered refractory may consist of alumina, zircon, silica or magnesia and preferably has a particle size in the range 350 to 450 mesh Tyler Standard Sieve. Iron sand may be mixed with the powdered refractory. Copolymers of vinyl acetate may be used. The metallic pattern (1) is placed on a tank (4) containing the facing agent (2) and the latter blown on to the surface of the pattern to form a film (3). The pattern is now turned over and the tank (4) replaced by a frame (6) into which shell sand is charged. After a given time, the frame (6) and pattern (1) are inverted so that any sand which has not adhered to the film falls away and the thus formed mould (8) together with the pattern (1) calcined at a temperature between 200‹ and 300‹ C. prior to separating the mould from the pattern.
