Abstract
1318394 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 27 May 1970 [30 May 1969] 25577/70 Addition to 1112017 Heading B3F Moving metal, at least partly solidified, e.g. a continuous casting 3, is cooled with the aid of a cooling element, such as the element 1 shown in Fig. 1 or one of the two shown in Fig. 4, liquid coolant (water) being passed into a gap 9 between the metal and a (copper) plate 4 or 40 (or 40<SP>1</SP>) of the element through openings 8 or 43, to create a turbulent flow so that the coolant penetrates coolant-vapour film on the metal, the metal being contacted by surfaces 6 or 41 at the plate face which guide the moving metal and determine the gap width. The plates are cooled independently of the gap coolant, the plate 4 by spray nozzles 7 and the plates 40, 40<SP>1</SP> by a circulating system passing water through jackets behind them. The elements 1 or 41 are used in continuous casting installations described in Specification 1,112,017. The casting- contacting surfaces 6 are the coated ends of screws 5 arranged in staggered rows and settable to determine the gap 9, possibly differently at, say, the casting edge or to contact a curved casting surface. They may be strip-like or ring-shaped or be ribs running round the plate 1. They may be bosses or ribs created by welded or sprayed hard-facing. The adjustable screws may have flats, Fig. 3 (not shown), at their sides downstream of the casting movement to provide the openings for coolant liquid flow to the gap 9 from a jacket at the back of the plate 4. Fig. 4 shows consecutive transverse plates 40, 40<SP>1</SP>, which may comprise lengths with open expansion joints 47 between. The casting- contacting surfaces 41 are ribs and the coolant openings 43 lie between them but the surfaces may be interrupted so that a checkered pattern is formed.
