Abstract

1,274,785. Continuous casting. MANNES. MANN A.G. 16 Feb., 1970 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 7271/70. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting process, the strand is passed through a roller arrangement which removes more heat from the longitudinal centre of the strand than from the longitudinal edges thereof. The rollers may have cooling passages therein, the distance between the passage and the roller periphery increasing in a direction away from the roller centre towards its edges. In another embodiment the roller has pits or grooves on its surface so arranged that the area of contact between the surface of the roller and the strand decreases towards the longitudinal edges of the strand. A decrease in the thermal conductivity of each roller from its centre towards its ends may be achieved by applying a firmly adhering layer of metal or an oxideceramic to the surface of the roller. Any liquid remaining on the strand after it has passed through a first cooling zone is removed e.g. by a roller, before the strand passes between the cooling rollers.
