Abstract
1,184,147. Treating strand material. TECHNISERVICE CORP. 4 Sept., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 42110/68. Heading D1F. Treatment for a distorted e.g. crimped strand in which the strand is supported while passing through a heating zone, the rate of travel being reduced at successive increments of its travel through the zone and in which the strand is heated sufficiently to relieve the strains in the strand to the desired extent thereby shortening the strand is characterised in that the strand is then passed through a cooling zone at constant length. The heating and cooling zones are preferably contiguous and the strand passes directly from one to the other. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a succession of solid strand-supporting surfaces moving at progressively slower surface speeds, the speed of each remaining constant means for heating the strand during its passage between and over the surfaces and means for cooling the strand. The surfaces are preferably in the form of frusto-conical rollers 51 and 52 disposed in a chamber 41 in which heating elements 44 are arranged. The cooling zone preferably includes a pair of cylindrical rollers 151 and 152 disposed in a chamber 141 in which coolant conductive conduits 144 are arranged. The strand 11 is wrapped several times around the rollers 51, 52, 151 and 152. The chambers 41 and 141 are preferably arranged side-by-side.
