Abstract

876,930. Heat exchangers. FORTIER, A. Feb. 24, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6309/59. Class 64(3) In a method of exchanging heat between a heat conducting wall and a liquid, a number of fine jets of the liquid are directed against the wall in a direction substantially normal thereto, the jet velocity, diameter and distance through which they travel before they reach the wall being so selected having regard to the viscosity of the liquid, that they reach the wall as continuous streams and on impinging on the wall are deflected thereby to form continuous liquid films spreading in laminar flow from the point of contact and cling- ing to the wall, the spacing of the jets being so selected having regard to the temperature of the wall and the viscosity of the liquid, that the films of liquid spreading from adjacent points of contact meet and cause substantially the whole surface of the wall to be covered with the said films. In one application shown of the method, a number of small tubes 6 are fed with cooling water from a chamber 7 from which the tubes extend vertically towards a wall 5 to be cooled. The tubes are disposed in plan at the apices of a network of equilateral triangles (Fig. 5). The chamber 7 is provided with a pressure water inlet 9 and the water is exhausted through an cutlet 11 preferably at a velocity low enough to cause no substantial disturbance of the jets. In a further apparatus described horizontal jets are directed against a substantially cylindrical wall extending vertically.
